Dear Sir,
I am writing to you with regard to the medical students of Hong Kong University, many of whom are now continuing their studies at Medical Colleges in Free China.
At the time of the outbreak of the war in Hong Kong there were approximately 300 medical students in Hong Kong University of whom about 100 were students of the First Year. You will recollect that students were registered with the General Medical Council on passing the first examinations on Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and that subsequently, on graduation, these students were eligible to be included in the Medical Register. This latter is a point of major importance to most of the medical graduates of Hong Kong University as the majority of them enter practice in British regions such as Hong Kong, Malaya, British North Borneo, etc.
When the war broke out in Hong Kong final examinations were in progress and it was unanimously decided by the Senate at an Emergency Meeting on December 31st, 1941, for which the requisite quorum was present, to confer war-time degrees in Medicine on thos students whose examinations had been interrupted by the outbreak of war. These names included:·
Hilda Chan (Miss
Chan Ping Kwok Chow Cham Lau
Lau Po Hei
Lee Ching Iu
Leong Yean Seng
Ling Sing Hang
Ong Hian Pitt
E.N. Orloff (Posthumous Degree)
Soon Cheng Hoe
Wong Ching Kuen
(E.N. Orloff was barbarically murdered by the Japanese when he was carrying out his duties on the day the Japanese first landed on the island of Hong Kong, and it was felt that a posthumous degree should be awarded to him).
At a later meeting of the Senate which took place shortly before the internment of the majority of the University Staff it was further decided to award war-time degrees to the following 13 members of the final year class who would normally have expected to graduate in June 1942:-
The Secretary,
